Media Literacy Across the Curriculum

The final course that I took in my masters program was Media Literacy Across the Curriculum. This was a truly fascinating course that focused on the topic of media literacy and it's importance in the field of education. We covered the areas of encoding and decoding of media messages, ideologies and stereotypes in the media, reliability of sources and researching online, and the news media. Throughout the course we had several small projects and then a final paper. One of the projects utilized the technology of Video Ant, and we analyzed a film clip involving a classroom scene. In another project I created a media literacy project for my hypothetical high school students, and then completed the project myself to critique it. In my project I analyzed a commercial and identified stereotypes and ideologies present. The final project was to create a media literacy unit for the students of your choice, and using reliable resources provide evidence for your design. This course really helped me understand many diverse learning environments , as well as how to design a unit to help students better understand media literacy and it's importance to success in this world.
